Who we are

Beaumont House dates back to the 1850s when it was built as a private home.

It was the home of the Read family in the 1880s. On the 27th October 1884 Anketell Moutray Read was born in Beaumont House, the youngest son of Colonel John Moutray Read. Anketell Read was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in The Gloucestershire Regiment on 21st November 1903. He served in India.

He was 30 years old, and a Captain in the 1st Battalion, The Northamptonshire Regiment, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. This is the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

"On 25 September 1915 near Hulluch, France, Captain Read, although partially gassed, went out several times in order to rally parties of different units which were disorganised and retiring. He led them back into the firing line and regardless of danger to himself, moved about under withering fire, encouraging them, but he was mortally wounded while carrying out this gallant work. He had shown conspicuous bravery on other occasions, particularly on the night of 29/30 July when he carried out of action an officer who was mortally wounded, under a hot fire of rifle and grenades."

Beaumont House was later owned by the Tilley family, who ran a large muffin bakery in the town. The tiled floor in the reception area was restored in the 1980’s, after recovering discarded tiles from the same period when an adjacent house was being renovated. During the 1980's, Beaumont House was converted into a 4 star guest house and it has undergone extensive renovation.

In June 2018, Dublin born Fiona Burke bought Beaumont House, embarking on a completely new career after 20 years in the oil industry. Having moved from London with toddler Willow, Fiona is enjoying the new challenges that running a hotel business brings. Introducing modern technology to all aspects of the hotel’s operations, whilst maintaining excellent customer service, are Fiona’s key drivers for success.
